#SocialSummer Hometown Tourist #1 Birmingham, AL #socialinsiders

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 7:38 AM 1 comments

Join me on a hometown tour of Birmingham, Alabama. I have lived in Birmingham all of my life and never realized there was so much fun waiting to happen.

Vulcan Park and Museum

If you want to see Birmingham up close and personal, Vulcan Park atop Birmingham's Red Mountain is the first place to stop.

Vulcan is the world's largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands atop of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge, was originally created in 1904 as Birmingham's exhibit to the St. Louis World's Fair to showcase the city's booming iron industry. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular panoramic views of Birmingham and surrounding areas from an open-air observation balcony atop the statue’s 124-foot pedestal. Visitors can enjoy interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits and displays that give insight into the region's geology, history and industrial growth as well as a beautiful 10-acre urban green space. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area.

The Birmingham Zoo

Just down the road from iconic Vulcan is the famous Birmingham Zoo. One of Birmingham's most famous attraction, the Birmingham Zoo is home to many exotic animals as well as other cool attractions.

The Birmingham Zoo is Alabama’s must-see attraction, drawing more than 575,000 visitors annually. Approximately 950 animals of 230 species call the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo home, including sea lions, rhinos and endangered species from six continents.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Your visit isn't complete, unless you visit Birmingham's beautiful Botanical Gardens home to beautiful floral and fauna.

No trip to Birmingham is complete without a visit to Railroad Park and a Birmingham Baron's baseball game.

Railroad Park

This urban park in the middle of Birmingham inspires you to get back to nature and take in the scenic view of Birmingham.

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as "Birmingham's Living Room," Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham's downtown area with Southside and UAB's campus.

The Birmingham Barons and Regions Field

If you love baseball, look no further than the Birmingham Barons, Birmingham's hometown baseball team.
In April of 2013, the Birmingham Barons Baseball Club played their first game in their new ballpark, Regions Field. The state-of-the-art 8,500 seat facility in the heart of downtown replaced Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the home of the Barons since 1988. The crown jewel of Birmingham's newly developed Parkside District, features a variety of unique seating areas, creating an intimate atmosphere and offering unique views of the downtown skyline, UAB, Children's Hospital, Vulcan and Red Mountain.

I hope you have enjoyed my hometown tour to Birmingham. Y'all come back now, ya hear!

Guns, Gangs and God: The State of Public Schools

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 10:05 AM 0 comments

Parents we have a problem! The state of the public school system has gone from bad to worse in recent months. The most recent incident of a student bringing a gun to school happened in the New York School System where three teens were busted for bringing loaded guns to school (source: New York Daily News ).

Parents send their children to school to get an education, not become gang bangers or gun toting thugs.  As a parent, you need to question why guns and gangs run rampant in the Public School System. Who's to blame for this major problem with our schools?

Do parents blame the teachers or principals who cannot control the out of control student? Do you blame organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center who sued Birmingham Schools in December 2010 for using mace on hundreds of students? According to Ebony Glenn Howard, lead attorney on the case for the Center, “We must ask ourselves, what kind of school system allows armed officers to come in and use mace on its children?” (Source: AL.com) No Ms. Howard, we must ask ourselves why so many students are out of control.

Christian parents have enough to think about with their child being segregated into a secular school system without having to worry about guns and gangs. The problem went beyond control once God was taken out of the Public School System. A lot of parent's don't have the option of home schooling or sending their child to private school because the cost is too expensive. Some private schools charge as much as a two year college.

What are concerned parents supposed to do about this growing problem? Parent's need to make the teachers, principals, and administrators accountable, demand action and attend meetings to voice their concerns.

God needs to be back in the Public School System. Without Him,  guns and gangs will become the education your children receive.
