What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story- Book Review

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 7:37 AM 0 comments

What Daddy Did Today is a bedtime story for a father to read to his child.

When I was contacted to review this book, I wasn't sure if I could review this book. My grandson lost his father two years ago and I wasn't sure how he would react to a book about daddy. I was surprised at his reaction. My grandson loved the book!

Walter Wally brings great wit and style to What Daddy Did Today. This is a great book to read with your child whether your a parent or grandparent. My grandson gave it 2 thumbs up and I give it 5 parenting stars. I do recommend this book as a healing tool as well if you have a child in your life that has lost their daddy.

About the Author

Walter Wally was born and raised in Baltimore, MD.  At an early age, Walter discovered that he loved to tell rhyming stories.  One of Walter’s fondest memories is sitting in his basement as a young boy, and creating his first rhyming story to explain why the walls would creak.  If memory serves, I think Frankenstein had something to do with it.  Anyway, if anything can turn Walter into a kid again, it’s telling stories that people enjoy.  Walter writes rhyming stories for adults as well, and is available for all kinds of readings and events.
You can contact Walter Wally at: escoto@ufl.edu.

For more about Wally and What Daddy Did Today check out Wally's website.

Disclosure: I received a copy of What Daddy Did Today for review. Opinions in this post are my own.

Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the days of Norman Rockwell's Thanksgiving no longer exist. It did when I was growing up in the sixties and early seventies. I can still smell my grandma's turkey and ham wafting through her kitchen. I can still hear the chattering of all my cousins. I miss those days. They stopped after my dad passed away and my mom and I moved three-thousand miles away from Thanksgiving.

After I got married and had kids, I tried to give them a heirloom Thanksgiving with all the trimmings. It didn't go as planned. Times were rough for myself and my first husband. With four children we barely made ends meet. My kids never had a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving.

As time passed, kids grew up and went there own way. Now it's me, hubby, daughter, and grandson. We spend Thanksgiving, just the four of us around a tiny table wishing for that Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving.

It seems the older your children get the less they care about Thanksgiving. It's more about the food, playing video games, or watching football on T.V. The true meaning of Thanksgiving went out the door with yesterday's parents. It's our fault. We have become a society of fast-paced, let's get it over with Thanksgivings.

I want my grandson to experience a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving, but he probably never will. My family is scattered about and the excuses are never ending. There is now a hustle and bustle that keeps my family from that Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving. What's your excuse?

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. Psalms 100:4 NIV

AlternaVites Kids Review

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 9:05 AM 5 comments
Awhile back I received a box of alternaVitesKids to try and then review. The box contained 30 individually wrapped packets in raspberry cotton candy flavor. I though wow a new way to get my 8 year old grandson to take his vitamins.

My grandson hated to alternaVites Kids. I thought no biggie. He's 8, he hates anything good for him.

I tried them myself. It's a quick-melting powder you sprinkle on your tongue. 1st thing, no great taste for me personally. I don't like a medicine taste in my mouth. 2nd thing, it left a bitter after taste in my mouth.

While my family did not like the taste, you may want to judge for yourself.

alternaVites Kids® contains 17 essential vitamins and minerals specially formulated for children ages 4 and up.   Designed with both you and your children in mind, alternaVites Kids is remarkable not only for what it does contain, but also for what it doesn’t.
alternaVites Kids:
  • Melts in your mouth
  • Comes in 2 awesome flavors – strawberry bubblegum & raspberry cotton candy
  • One packet per day
  • Has 0 grams of sugar
  • Free of aspartame and high fructose corn syrup
  • Contains no artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives
  • Has no animal products or by-products
  • Does not contain egg, milk, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish or shellfish*
  • Certified kosher pareve
alternaVites Kids’ crystal powder makes it one of the most versatile vitamin products on the market.  Specially designed to fit easily into the way your family lives today, alternaVites Kids can be taken in so many ways.  Our favorite way is to simply sprinkle alternaVites Kids slowly onto the tongue, where it melts quickly.  However, you can also mix it into yogurts, puddings or smoothies, sprinkle it on top of fruit, lick it off a spoon – or be creative! The options are endless.
What’s more? You can rest assured you’re giving your children a high quality, potent multi loaded with the nutrients they need and without the additives they don’t.  Now there are no more reasons to give your children chalky chewables or gummies that are high in sugar, low in nutrients and can stick to their teeth.  Now there are no more excuses not to take vitamins with alternaVites Kids!
*However, we encourage all parents of children with food allergies or sensitivities to consult with their child’s doctor/pediatrician before use.

“I am UNJUNKING Halloween with @GetUnreal.”

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 2:00 PM 2 comments
This Halloween I'm UNJUNKING with @GetUnreal....

Today I'm testing Unreal candy with a few of my friends. You're probably wondering what is Unreal?

UNREAL™ exists because a thirteen year old boy asked one Halloween why candy needs to be so unhealthy.
After an argument with his father, he did a bit of research only to find that candy is filled with bad things like hydrogenated oils and artificial colors and flavors. And what’s worse, he found out that those ingredients don’t make candy taste better, they simply make it cheaper to produce.
Nicky believed that candy without the junk could be made and that it would taste better. And he and his father and brother decided to prove it.
And they did.
UNREAL™ provides many of the great flavor combinations we love in our treats, but without the corn syrup, without the partially hydrogenated oils, without the GMOs, without the artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives, and with 40% less sugar per serving on average. The key ingredients are responsibly sourced, and the candy is available in the stores we all shop, at a price point we can all afford.

I'm a grandmother to an eight year old boy who loves candy, but I don't want him to have all the unnatural ingredients, so when I was approached to host an UNJUNK with UNREAL party I jumped at the chance. Another reason I am UNJUNKING with UNREAL is my husband was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes.

UNREAL candy is delicious, it's junk free which is a big A+ in my book. Today as part of spreading the word about UNJUNKING Halloween with @GetUnreal I'm hosting a party. I am sharing UNREAL with moms and grandmothers.

I had a blind taste test with the goodies I received which included: candy coated chocolates, peanut butter cups, chocolate caramel nougat bars, chocolate caramel peanut nougat bars and candy coated chocolate with peanuts.

What they had to say:

"Great candy!" Ashley B.
"I can't tell the difference." April G.

The praises went on and on for UNREAL.

To learn more about UNREAL check out their FB page , twitter or join the UNREAL™ Nation.
When sharing on twitter use hashtag #GetUnreal.

Disclosure: I received five boxes of UNREAL candy to share with friends and monetary compensation for hosting an UNJUNK Halloween with @GetUnreal party from Global Influence and resourceful mommy media.

HAPPY UNJUNKED HALLOWEEN! Pick up your favorite Unreal Candy Unjunked at CVS to share with your ghosts and goblins this Halloween.

Mabel's Labels Make Back to School Easy Breezy Review

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 10:12 AM 1 comments
When I was approached about reviewing mabel's labels I thought they would be just like any other brand of labels, but I was wrong!

I was sent their Ultimate Back-to-School Combo™ with limited edition motifs and colour choices to review.
My packet arrived with a lot of fun goodies for back to school. Inside were personalized labels and bookbag tags for my grandson Nicholas just in time for his first day of school. mabel's labels made his day easier and my day less hectic knowing his things were personalized with good quality labels and the great thing was I didn't have to use an ugly black permanent market. Nicholas had his own name on his own labels which got him excited about back to school.

Thanks mabel's labels for making back to school a breeze! I give then two thumbs up and a gold star...

Be sure to check them out and get your back to school supplies.

Parenting Isn't All Sunshine and Ice Cream Advocating for Another Carnival 2012 August 23 • Day 3: Challenge Accepted! Post

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 10:52 AM 5 comments

Today's Advocating for Another prompt is Parenting isn’t all sunshine and ice cream – it’s hard. Write a post that delves into 3 challenges that you face as a parent.

When my grandson was born he looked "normal", I knew the possibility that he wouldn't be because his mother(my daughter) has mental issues and his father did also. Of course I prayed Nicholas wouldn't inherit their genetics. My prayers went unanswered, but over time I've come to accept God didn't make a mistake and my grandson is who he is suppose to be.

For the last eight years raising Nicholas has been a challenge. If I had to pick only three(of course there are more)I would choose the challenges of discipline, education and everyday life.

How do I as a stand-in parent choose to discipline a child who has SPD? When my grandson was a toddler discipline was never a major problem. It wasn't until he turned 4 that discipline flew out the window. Nothing works with Nicholas. Because of his condition, he ignores all forms of punishment(at home that is). I'm not saying there haven't been discipline issues at school, but home is where he seems to act out the most. It's not a picnic or a walk in the park raising Nicholas, but God dealt me this hand and I know someday and someway I will get through the discipline hand and learn from my mistakes and actually learn from my grandson what works best for him.

Education from the time Nicholas started school has been a major issue. We fought all through K5 to get him put in special ed. It wasn't until the end of the school year he was placed where he should have been. In 1st grade we had a lot of issues with his teacher. Nicholas did not like her and rebelled. Of course things did get better once he was in 2nd grade. He loved his teacher and became a star student. This school year is 3rd grade and a new school. I don't know how it will turn out. So far, so good. We will stay on our toes and tuned in to make sure all goes well. It's just another hand in the game of life with Nicholas.

Everyday life issues is a challenge in our house. They are days when he can become irritated, combative and abusive. They are days when he is happy and calm. I never know what the day will bring, but I always try to be up to the challenge and prepared for the worst. I would prefer the best, but it doesn't always happen as planned. Nicholas is a hand full, but he's my ace and I wouldn't trade all the gold in the world for another grandchild....

Advocating for Another Carnival 2012 August 22 • Day 2: These are A Few of My Favorite Things Post

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 10:31 AM 0 comments

Today's prompt for Advocating for Another is List time! Write 5-10 of your favorite things about your loved one. Celebrate their uniqueness and be sure to tell us why
those are your favorite things.

Today I get to share my favorite things about my grandson Nicholas...

10. He is honest. I love that in my grandson. He's at the age(8) where he tells you like it is whether it hurts your feelings or not. Sometimes he's too honest.
9. He is gentle. I love my grandson's gentle nature. He is a nurturing soul who cares about others.
8. He is smart. Although he is a special ed. my grandson is smart. He knows more than I did when I was his age.
7. He is charming. Nicholas has a way of charming those around him. He could be a snake charmer.
6. He is kind. Nicholas wouldn't hurt a fly. He treats everyone around him with kindness and care.
5. He is helpful. When something needs to be done, Nicholas is the first to jump in.
4. He is clever. He is always figuring out how things work or how to do something.
3. He is independent. Nicholas likes to do things on his own.
2. He is stubborn. I'm not sure I like this quality, because he's too much a reflection of myself.
1. He is dependable. I know I can always count on him no matter what.

Win Kids Over With Big Time Relief & Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

Posted by Debra Ann Elliott at 8:23 PM 1 comments

It's that time of year again. Seasonal allergies are back, and kids everywhere are suffering as a result. Not everyone knows it, but over two million school days are missed each year due to seasonal and indoor allergies. How can a kid be a kid when they can't help but focus on their allergies?

That's why we're excited to share the news about Children's Claritin®, the #1 Pediatrician Recommended Non-Drowsy Brand — an important fact to note when choosing medication for your child. Only Children's Claritin® provides powerful 24 hour, non-drowsy relief, so your child can get back to the things they love to do.

But for 40 million children who do suffer from allergies, symptoms can interfere with their everyday activities, including school work, and extracurricular activities. Don't let allergies hold your child back from achieving their full potential at school, on the playing field and at home - whether it be a music lesson or having fun with the family, like going to the movies or the circus.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted in theaters June 8!
Speaking of the circus, the dynamic group, of Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, and Melman the Girafee, and Gloria the Hippo, is still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a travelling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar-style.

Circus performers need to be at their best. Being in an allergy fog or taking an allergy medication that may make them drowsy is simply not an option. NO Drowsiness Allowed!

Well since it's a party let me tell you a little about myself and family first.

I'm a 50 something wife, mother, grandmother, author and college student. I've been married to my hubby almost 26 years. I have 4 grown children and one grandson. My oldest daughter and grandson live with us. I am a Christian. I am a published author and currently have 4 active blogs.

I just recently enrolled in college and starting working outside the home. It's a whole new experience for me.

I enjoy many activities including cooking, reading, writing, blogging, swimming and genealogy.
My family: April, Nicholas, Me and David

More about this blog:

Establishing Christian Parenting is a little of a year old. I started this blog because I couldn't find many Christian parenting blogs out there in the blog-a-sphere.

The main purpose of my blog is to guide Christian parents and help them make the right decisions. I also review and blog about different products I think make a difference. On my blog you'll find post about different causes I believe in and every now and then a great give-a-way.

I hope when you stop by you'll enjoy your stay and come back often.

Enjoy the party!
