#SocialSummer Hometown Tourist #1 Birmingham, AL #socialinsiders

Join me on a hometown tour of Birmingham, Alabama. I have lived in Birmingham all of my life and never realized there was so much fun waiting to happen.

Vulcan Park and Museum

If you want to see Birmingham up close and personal, Vulcan Park atop Birmingham's Red Mountain is the first place to stop.

Vulcan is the world's largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands atop of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge, was originally created in 1904 as Birmingham's exhibit to the St. Louis World's Fair to showcase the city's booming iron industry. But, Vulcan is more than a statue. Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular panoramic views of Birmingham and surrounding areas from an open-air observation balcony atop the statue’s 124-foot pedestal. Visitors can enjoy interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits and displays that give insight into the region's geology, history and industrial growth as well as a beautiful 10-acre urban green space. With an official information center that is operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area.

The Birmingham Zoo

Just down the road from iconic Vulcan is the famous Birmingham Zoo. One of Birmingham's most famous attraction, the Birmingham Zoo is home to many exotic animals as well as other cool attractions.

The Birmingham Zoo is Alabama’s must-see attraction, drawing more than 575,000 visitors annually. Approximately 950 animals of 230 species call the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo home, including sea lions, rhinos and endangered species from six continents.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Your visit isn't complete, unless you visit Birmingham's beautiful Botanical Gardens home to beautiful floral and fauna.

No trip to Birmingham is complete without a visit to Railroad Park and a Birmingham Baron's baseball game.

Railroad Park

This urban park in the middle of Birmingham inspires you to get back to nature and take in the scenic view of Birmingham.

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham that celebrates the industrial and artistic heritage of our great city. Situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets, the park is a joint effort between the City of Birmingham and the Railroad Park Foundation. Hailed as "Birmingham's Living Room," Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham's downtown area with Southside and UAB's campus.

The Birmingham Barons and Regions Field

If you love baseball, look no further than the Birmingham Barons, Birmingham's hometown baseball team.
In April of 2013, the Birmingham Barons Baseball Club played their first game in their new ballpark, Regions Field. The state-of-the-art 8,500 seat facility in the heart of downtown replaced Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the home of the Barons since 1988. The crown jewel of Birmingham's newly developed Parkside District, features a variety of unique seating areas, creating an intimate atmosphere and offering unique views of the downtown skyline, UAB, Children's Hospital, Vulcan and Red Mountain.

I hope you have enjoyed my hometown tour to Birmingham. Y'all come back now, ya hear!
